Making Yourself at Home: Where to Stay

We began our stay on the historic Duke of Gloucester Street in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, where quaint homes line the picturesque main street connecting Merchants Square to the Capitol. Our lodging, the historic Orlando Jones Kitchen (a colonial house), offered a cozy attic bedroom and a charming fireplace, evoking a sense of Colonial-era comfort. Just across the street, a gorgeous garden welcomed us with unexpected visitors—two rabbits enjoying an evening nibble among the vegetables and flowers.

Later in our visit, we savored the luxury of the renowned Williamsburg Inn, where elegant accommodations and splendid grounds highlighted our stay. The abundance of flowers at the Inn—and throughout Williamsburg—are meticulously cared for and added to the area’s lush, green appeal.

Staying in the heart of the historic district allowed us to fully appreciate Williamsburg’s architectural treasures. From shingled cottages to stately brick homes, each building seemed to whisper stories of its past. The evening strolls through cobblestone streets, illuminated by lanterns and streetlights, created a magical ambiance that transported us back in time.

A Tour of Timeless Charm

Williamsburg’s charm extends beyond its lodging, though. Landmarks like the Capitol and Governor’s Palace showcase stunning architecture that defines the area’s rich history. Carriage rides through town added an extra layer of nostalgia, highlighting the town’s enduring allure.

At the College of William & Mary, located adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg, the campus’ historic buildings and manicured gardens provide a glimpse into academic life that is steeped in tradition. We toured the college with Junket Tours and saw the regal brick house where the President resides. Oh, if these walls could talk…the tales they would tell!

Finding Serenity

While in Williamsburg, we also stopped by Freedom Park and the Williamsburg Botanical Garden, which each offered tranquil respites full of lush vegetation and historical significance dating back centuries. We strolled some of the walking trails and saw an 18th-century cemetery on the grounds, as well as three historically accurate re-created cabins, furnished with items authentic to that time period.

Exploring Yorktown: History, Homes, and Waterfront Charm

With its waterfront views and historical significance (as the site of British surrender during the American Revolution), nearby Yorktown offered a scenic backdrop for exploring charming homes, shops, and restaurants.

One such establishment we visited was the Cole Digges House, a notable landmark in Historic Yorktown Village that dates back to the early 1700s. It’s currently the home of Mobjack Coffee Roasters and Petite Cafe, but has an incredible history as one of the nine original buildings still standing from before the Revolutionary War.

Just down the street, Riverwalk Landing provided a wonderful ambiance as we strolled along the York River. Speaking of the river, we saw a stellar sunset as part of our evening sailing excursion with Yorktown Sailing Charters.

A Time for Reflection at Historic Jamestowne

Historic Jamestowne holds immense historical importance as the first permanent English settlement in America. Our walking tour was truly captivating, transporting us back to the 1600s and allowing us to imagine life in the New World. The old Memorial Church, complete with its original 17th-century tower, was a highlight of the visit, offering a magnificent glimpse into the past. Glass panels on the floor provided a unique perspective, revealing the brick foundation of the ancient church. Experiencing these historical treasures firsthand was a delight, bringing to life the stories we had previously only encountered in books. As a visual learner, I cherished the opportunity to absorb the sights and beauty of this storied place.
